My gorgeous client, Chicago blogger Mel Cheng, and I had the best portrait shoot at A New Leaf in Lincoln Park. If you’ve never been, A New Leaf is an oasis of gorgeous flowers, nooks, crannies, and decor. As if the aesthetic wasn’t enough, the entire five-story location smells deliciously of nectar. Needless to say, I can’t get enough!

Google just announced they’ve bundled all their awesome tools to make it easier to plan your wedding. We’ve been long time fans of Google Docs (which used for both our wedding and our honeymoon), but now they also make it easy to make your own website for your guests to view. They feature beautiful Michelle Rago designs (an amazing New York wedding designer)… only thing they’re missing? Our photos of course!! (weird that they wouldn’t ask us, huh?)

And Spain scores…

Feature

This is Fremont’s FireStation #7

Photojournalism assignment - portraiture

The firefighter’s helmet weighs at least a few pounds

Meet the air mask… “now imagine that at I have to add the helmet over my head”

The axe is one of the most used tools – from doors, to gates, to walls that just need to go!

The boots sit by the truck, with pants folded over. When a call comes in, the firefighter literally hops in his shoes and hops in the truck!

The space the firefighter has in the truck is pretty cramped.

Who doesn’t want to look their best on their wedding day? These 5 simple tips will help any bride stand out in her photos and shine forever:

1. Give your elbow some breathing room.
If you hold your arms close to your body, they will flatten out and look bigger. When holding your bouquet or holding hands, simply create a little bit of space between your elbow and your body to instantly appear slimmer!

2. Watch “America’s Next Top Model”.
What does modeling have to do with you? You’ll be the shining star of the camera for a day on your wedding! Tyra coaches average girls on how to be an international model – watching even 3 hours from the past season and you’ll rock the poses at the wedding!

3. Breeeeeathe.
Ever saw photos of you where you look stiff? People tend to hold their breath when they get their photos taken, and that stiffens the entire body. Breathing through your shots will make you look more natural, more relaxed, and translate into more flattering angles for you.

4. Ask your bridesmaid to carry a mister.
Misters aren’t just good to keep flowers fresh – they’re good to keep you fresh, too. The rush of adrenaline, the packed schedule, the corsette on your dress, the 2 million hugs you’ll be giving that day will all contribute to you feeling hot and tired. Ask your bridesmaid to carry a mister and to spray the back of your neck and your forearms throughout the day to make you feel refreshed and ready for the next shot.

5. Eat.
Your wedding is going to be packed; your schedule will be busy and you’ll keep moving all day. That means that you will need energy to look your freshest when the 3,000th photo comes around. The key is to eat high fiber foods early in the day – start the morning with a banana and ask another bridesmaid to carry one around in case you feel a little tired when the 5pm crunch comes around.
Caution – avoid foods that may stain your clothes or your teeth, such as cherries, blueberries, coffee, oreos, colored candy or red wine (there’s a reason champagne is the preferred alcohol!).

5 five minute tips to promote your photography business

Creating a unique html signature in Gmail and Yahoo Mail

Who doesn’t have five minutes to help get the word out for their photography business?
Here are 5 things that take five minutes, and what you should’ve done instead:

1. get more out of your email

What you did:
Write an email to mom trying to explain why you didn’t call last Sunday (well, that may take more than 5mn)

What you should’ve done instead:
Use Wisestamp for your email and embed your business website, your Facebook fan page, etc. in your email automagically so that anyone you email knows about your business (yes, your mom, and the thousands of other people you email every year). Works seamlessly with Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and seriously takes 3mn to install.

2. Put your face out on Facebook

What you did:
Wrote on your BFF’s wall about your latest photoshoot

What you should’ve done instead:
Create a Facebook Page for your business and suggest to friends (and tell them to suggest to their friends!). Bonus to get traction: add an original profile pic or take photos for a local charity and invite participants to tag themselves on the photos you upload to your page’s wall.

Also make sure that you add a friendly message when you ask friends, like “Hey, come write something on my newly created Facebook page!”. So… if you like these tips, come and write something on the Sphynge Photography Facebook wall!

3. Make the latte extra sweet for your business

What you did:
Wait in line for you latte (5mn is a short lane!)

What you should’ve done instead:
Think of the number of other people waiting in line for their latte! Ask your local coffee shop if they’ll let you offer a free photo shoot – add a fish bowl for people to drop their business card into, and voila! You’ve got yourself a winner to try your services & tell their friends – along with new customer list of people you can send photo tips to.

4. Give more than your business card

What you did:
Spend 5 hours working on your business card, only to give it to a guy in the coffee shop line, who then tossed it with his cup.

What you should’ve done instead:
While most photographers think of putting their latest photo on their business card, few think about the back of the business card… how about putting 3 tips to look better in photographs on the back of your card? That will help you be remembered, and lessen the chance your card gets tossed away.

Tip to make a photography business card that'll stand out

5. give your laptop a makeover

What you did:
You spent 5 minutes scratching off the old promotional stickers from your laptop (damn those things are resilient!)

What you should’ve done instead:
Make your very own promotional tool! Create a unique branded laptop cover with GelaSkins Inc. – uploading your photo with the name of your business and website only takes five minutes.… and think of the number of times you’re working at that coffee shop looking at that laptop!
